I have just joined the forum and this is my first post.

I have just re-acquired a CXR 230 (I am the first and third owner, I bought it new in 2010, sold it to a mate 3 years later and have just bought it back). I quite liked the 230 when I first bought it, I was living in the Netherlands at the time, I only paid £1400 for it (brand new, OTR) and it was ideal for running around town and green lanes. Soon after returning to England the domestic situation dictated that I had to dispose of the bike, but I'm pleased to say it has hardly been used in the intervening 5 years and has probably only covered 500 miles in that time.

The bike is going to be a bit of a project. I got it going again yesterday (the electric starter doesn't work, although I think that it just need a new battery so I've ordered one and I'll find out whether that sorts the problem in a few days). After cleaning the plug and some new fuel the bike started up on the kick starter, and everything else seems to work. Assuming I don't find anything else wrong as I go over the bike I'll get it MoT tested by the end of the month and put it back on the road in April.

There is always a lot of talk about whether these bikes were the same as the Honda CRF 230, although the engines were not manufactured by Honda, they do seem to be pretty well identical and parts seem interchangeable. To test this out I ordered a replacement full exhaust for a CRF 230 to tidy up the rather scruffy factory item. I fitted it this morn and found everything lined up exactly, the only fettling was to ease out the holes for the two head studs with a round file, although I suspect I would have had to do that if the bike had been a Honda (the replacement was an aftermarket item, but rather nicer than both the Honda and CCM originals). The bike certainly runs much smoother than with the original exhaust, it is hard to say whether any more ponies have been released because of the snow - but I'll try it out soon.

I'm planning a few more small modifications (Keihin PWK carburetor - which looks like it may be an easy swap, probably lower the gearing a bit for green laning, some hand guards and maybe a better sump guard). I'm looking forward to enjoying some mild off roading with the bike (although my 13 year old son has taken a shine to it and may well claim it as part of his estate).

Good morn,

I'm pleased to see my first post didn't get lost in the ether at all!

The engine/gearbox unit does seem identical to the Honda unit, which is good news. The exhaust fitted with no problems and I've taken all the servicing information from a Honda CRF site. I think engine spares will be no problem, cycle parts seem to be fairly generic Chinese, so I'm hoping they will be okay as well.

I fitted a new battery yesterday and the bike now fires up very quickly on the starter. It sounds much better through the Honda exhaust. The next improvement will be fitting a Keihin PWK carburetor - which looks like it will be a straight replacement (and only cost $49).

I'll post some photos when I work out how.

Alan

I think the Honda exhaust looks a lot better than the original.

Many thanks to Monty to moving the rest of this thread to the 'Projects' section. I'll bring this introduction to a close now.

I don't know whether anyone else is interested in the 230s, but I'll continue to post anything I think might be useful in the project.
