Week of night shift. So I can use the car for work, thought perfect time to look at the leaking exhaust stubs.

Headers came out of the exhaust stubs easy enough. First worry done.

Then the bolt sheared! Nightmare!!!!

Question is does the head need to come off or can it be done in situ???

In my experience that rarely works. Mine was snapped before I even bought it, drilled it, helicoiled, job done. Only use stainless for studs

Thanks for the offer Woodcarver. Will see how it goes with the welded nut technique, then may be in contact.

done it that way for years with track roller bolts on excavators and dozers

also stainless studs are a right fu*** to drill if they snap

It's seized solid! Welded on a nut which then sheared off the stud flush with the head.
Still well worth a try, now to remove the head. A

Use Hssco drills or carbide tips, it's like cheese then!

You can do it in situe if you're careful. I did 6 out of 8 on my mates r6 with nothing but the radiator out the way.

Decided I'm not having the best of luck at the moment, broke my frame to rngine oil filter somehow, so took the head off last night and dropped it to the engine builders this morning. Hoping to have it back by the weekend. :goodgrief:

I had the same problem. Managed to drill it in situ but would have been easier if head was removed. My advice....use the best drill bits you can get hold of. I used some crap ones to no avail until i got a set of erbaur bits. I started small with a center punch and got gradually bigger. That way i didnt need to heli coil

Head back from machinist. Broken stud machined out, and bottom left hand stud had been broken previously.
This one had been M8 helicoiled and another stud sheared in that Helicoil, which had then been drilled and helicoiled M6. Machinist removed all this and fitted a nice M8 thread insert. Re-assemble it all tomorrow. :dirtbike:

Spent the day in the garage and now all back together. Sounds much crisper on the throttle now the header isn't leaking horrendously!
Can't wait for the test ride tomorrow. :dirtbike:
