Hi all, Well suddenly deceided to put the bike back on the road after it was put away about 8 years ago when the kids arrived. Changed the oil, blead the brakes, sorted the speedo, gonna put a decomp lever on it but that can wait for now. My main ask is for getting the bike to run right the spark plug has always been black and sooty so assume its always ran rich, have a 185 main jet in it with a Quill exhaust. I have read so much but dont really know the easiest place to start, should I move the needle up a clip? Cheers in advance Mark |

Have you opened up the sides of the airbox? As thats whats needed for a 185 mains and race can, failing that try lowering the needle one clip. |

Hi Monty, Thanks so much for the reply, no the sides are not opened up but the top is cut away to fit the filter, forgot to mention that it also has a K&N filter. When you say open up the sides do you mean drill holes in the sides as I have seen some do and if so should I drill both sides? or even take the box out completely? Cheers again Mark Edited by housewinnie, Oct 10 2016, 06:40 AM.

Some drill holes using a tank cutter only in the left side, or cut the whole side out then fit mesh to stop small children being sucked in, I would try to purchase a box already cut out, as a complete box is not availiable anymore, or just fit a std 175 main jet |

Cheers again Monty, Will look give it a try. One more thing my inline plastic oil filter has a slight leak, and I cannot find anywhere to buy one, is there an alternative you know of? Cheers once more Mark |

The disc oil filters as far as I know are not availiable any more, Gary at Sportax may have some. I dont know of an alternative maybe Haines. |

Do you think one of these would work http://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/product.aspx?prod=81-0231 |

As its a fuel filter, I would not like to say, its all down to the size of the internal mesh |

No Primary filters left anymore.. Anthony and me are looking for a suitable alternative.. dont use a fuel filter tho as that will lead TO A CERTAIN SEIZURE! |

Well she passed the MOT the other day after 8 years sat in the garage with only one advisery that I tighten up bolts on rear sprocket, can you believe every one was loose, just proves nyloc nuts do do their job. Anyway 8 years off the road and a trip for an MOT and its in pieces again in the garage kept cutting out and didnt like being revved quick, came to a halt at home misfired and spat fuel out of the float breather. Took the carb apart and found that the idle jet/pilot jet was slightly blocked could this cause this? Anyway am going to strip and clean carb again whilst its off and put on new inlet rubber as mine was touching rear spring bracket. Gotta get this bike running sweat once and for all.. |

Possible, any kind of blockage will cause a running prob, dont forget to set float height to 17mm |

Cheers again all for the help and advice. Are there any obvious symptoms of a bike running too lean as I would rather have it set on the richer side for the engines sake. Have replaced all the jets except for the air mixture screw, will replace this one soon as there doesnt seem to be any difference between running from 1/2 a turn out onwards, but other than that pulls really well through all the gears. One other thing though as its set up and I only have supermoto wheels is there any way I can make the throttle a little lighter, I understand that as it has the heavy throttle slide that I cannot alter the throttle slide spring for a lighter one? Cheers Mark |

If the bike mixture screw makes no difference from 1/2 a turn outwards, then there is a blockage in your idle jet or more probably the passageways. The hole in the carb throat it tiny and easily gets blocked so you need to take out the mixture screw and makes sure all the passageways are clear. Try squirting carb cleaner down front hole ( nearest engine) in the carb throat and you should see it coming out of the mixture screw hole. Block the mixture screw hole with finger and you should see the cleaning fluid coming out of other little holes under or near the slide, and then out of the the pilot air jet ( carb bellmouth end ) Wear eye protection as the stuff sprays everywhere A blockage on your pilot jet system would cause the problems you have. Basic rules to follow would bike starts easy without choke, then runs worse as it gets warm - too rich Bike needs choke and for a long time, but seems to run fine when really warm - too lean. These are mainly idle tests. As far as mid rev running, try running at steady half throttle and putting on the choke a bit. If bike runs better then its too lean. If it falters then mixture is in the right area. Fairly basic I know but enough to stop you running so far out that you might do damage. Dont know about throttle spring - Thought that they were all the same and pretty light so have you checked the cable and the actual throttle. |

Excellnt thank you so much will try that with carb. Looked on Eurocarb and there are 2 different throttle slides for the phm carb I have what they call ( PHM heavy slide KTM etc ) The guys at Eurocarb say that I cannot use a different spring with this but I could change to the newer throttle slide but that works out just too much cash so guess I will just have to man up a little.. Cheers Mark |
