I want to start kick starting my 604 every now and again to save battery as I mainly do short journeys.

I tried last week but no luck.

Ignition on
Choke on
Fuel on

A slow kick then a hard one ... nothing.

Help please lol

Also what's this Sprag switch all about

Thanks Shaun

yes the decomp is needed, but there is a special way of setting it up before the kick to start it.

it's something like get the piston to just over TDC, but as i dont own a 604 im sure someone will come along soon and tell you the correct procedure.

well done Hursty !!!...right the procedure is as follows...pull the choke IN...push DOWN on the decomp lever on top of the head ....now slowly move kick start down until decomp lever clicks back up...let the kick start return to the start position then give it a half hearted kick, dont give a big kick cause it wont start straight away..push the decomp lever down and repeat 3 times on the 5th attempt turn choke OFF, push decomp down ,push kjck start til decomp clicks up ,let kick start return to top ....this time give a real good kick, at this point i have my finger on the choke so that when it ires i put the choke straight back on to get it running, i normally do the whole procedure TWICE before it starts !!!! sounds very long winded but it always works and in real life probably takes no more than a minute ,it just takes longer to explain :D

My 604 starts that easy off the kick that I'm getting rid of the elecky start. Here's the procedure

Decomp on

Very slowly move the kickstart down till you hear the decomp click off

Let the kickstart return to the top

Good boot with no throttle or choke (I try to turn the throttle the wrong way so it doesn't accidentally turn when kicking)

Should start first or second kick

Starting from stone cold I find if I use choke it wont start.I kick it with choke on a couple of times to prime and then choke off and it starts within a couple more kicks always using the procedure above The 55 choke jet is to big, you'll probably find when starting(electric or kick) that the choke has to be switched off within a couple of seconds of starting. I'm putting a 47 jet in as I'm reliably informed this is the correct size and should start straight off from cold.
Kickstarting is that easy I could do it in bare feet when done this way.
One other thing, boot it when astride the bike with the sidestand up because the kicker catches the stand if its down and you don't get a proper full swing.

Ah well you got the info twice there,Delstar beat me to it without me realising :D

When stopping the tractor use the decomp to kill the engine(or I sometimes stall mine) and not the kill switch as this stops the crank kicking backwards and wrecking the starter sprag.

@delstar and Cuz: Very good explained! Also do it this way (yesterday with no luck  )
On my MZ 500 with a Dellorto PHF 34 it was more easier, cause the PHF had the accelerator pump system ( there you have to open the throttle 2-3 times - before starting like explained - and fresh fuel was pumped into the inlet)
And the advice with the smaller choke jet I will test within the next weeks, thanks from my side. Also have always the thing with the need to switch off the choke right after starting, cause engine is spluttering with "choke on".

Would be good. The dellorto supplier here in Germany only offers 45 Choke jets (had a look straight after my post). If it works on your CCM I will try it with the 45, the difference to the 47 should be not that big....

Yeah I forgot that Chris,I ordered a 45 as well because the 47 is discontinued. Don't know if this way of starting will work for you Gareth if your still on the old style carb but worth a try and the decomp kickstart procedure should be the same.

holding the decomp lever down will stall in the engine, but not in the violent way the kill switch does

In best case you have decomp lever on the handlebars - if not, then press the decomp lever forward directly under the tank. But always wearing gloves - without its an experience with warm engine :D

Chris

Jonny, just seen you were faster.....
