Re-spraying alloy rims?; Any tips on DIY wheel spraying

Looking to change the colour of my 3spokes on my r30 and trying to keep costs down so rather than pay for professional refurbs I'd like to do it myself, had a dabble of body work on my minis in the past.
Anyone done this themselves and any tips on prepping the rims and what type of spray to use? Going from gold to black and obviously will use original primer so just de-greasing/ smoothing over of original paint I'm guessing???

Honestly mate by the time youve bought all the sand paper, primer and paint the cost isn't too much different from just taking them to a powdercoaters.

just remember that they are magnesium and they will catch fire if they get too hot

Been quoted £120 for paint shop to do them and dont really have that spare just to change colour of rims so its either make do, or do it meself! ;) as for primer, wouldnt need that part doing as the factory primer would be fine, im pretty sure once degreased its just a case of putting some more layers of paint on...

if your going to do it just make sure you do key in all the corners and stuff as these are the hardest areas to get too.

only use water when wet sanding, i know a lot of people used to add washing up liquid etc.
i would probably just go in with a 6 or 800 grit.
meths or white spirit to clean the wheel after then before spraying use a tack cloth.

be prepared to touch up after changing tyres though as they will more than likely chip.

Hi av done a few set of wheel myself like you to keep costs down.its all in the prep give them a good rub down then clean i use thinners but i also primer mine but that's up to you build up paint with light coats leaving for 15min between coats when happy. I leave over night then wet & dry clean again then put several coats of clear lacquer had no probs with chipping paint come Tyre change just take your time black being a common colour you can get it cheap try to avoid silicone paint.that you get from cheap outlets as i found it reacts go for it ;)
