Kill Switch Doesn't Kill...!

My 'spark killer' on the light control works, but you obviously have to hold it down until the engine dies, which takes time when you're on the move. What's the point of this?!

The red kill switch on the starter control, kills the ignition / neutral light / starter motor, before the bike is running, but then does nothing when the bike is running?!

I assume that the red kill switch should cut the bike, even when it's running? Surely?

im not sure thats true on the 604 .. yes it will stop the bike starting on the button .. but when you have a dead battery you can then kick the bike over.

so to stop it starting on the kick or to kill it when its running it would need to interrupt the generator?

Iv never known a kill switch not to kill the engine when running. Thats what its designed for. But then again could be somethin stupid and it doesnt kill it.

You should be stopping the engine using the decomp anyway, as it saves the sprag.

both kill switches should kill the engine, unless you have a suzy right hand switchgear, is it a switch you push left or right or a button you push in and hold?

sounds like the suzy one which is 2 wires and cuts the electric from the run relay, hense the electric going of.

The rotax is a self generating engine, and needs the coil wire shorted to ground to stop
If it aint sharp I can play with it

If I needed to kill it in an emergency, I think I'd struggle to reach for the decomp lever monty ;) Normally, I turn it off at the key.

Do people normally use the decomp lever to stop their bikes?

The red kill switch below the starter button is a red, left to right switch. The actual switch obviously 'works' as (pre running), it kills the starter and neutral light. It also clicks a relay, close to the battery.

My other switch on the left hand side is a 'push and hold' one, that just kills the spark.

Hopefully, it's not another MOT failure, as the restest is tomorrow....

to use the decomp properly you need the cable and lever on the bars.

Sounds like you have a suzy kill switch on the right, both should be push and hold and obviously connected to the same point in the loom.

not a mot failure, so you will be fine

Thanks Monty - That's good news then. I need to get it through the MOT to start enjoying it properly. There's only so myuch fun I can have in the garage!!

My right hand switch is the same as this, so I guess it's not the right one.

That be the suzy one mate.

It can be made to work as it should on your particular bike

trace the 2 wires back to the connectors, disconect and join the 2 from the loom together.

the switch pair, fix one to earth and find the single wire to the left hand switch and join the other wire to it
If it aint sharp I can play with it

Thanks very much Monty. I'll put it on the 'future projects' list, once the MOT is out of the way.

Just for info - the kill switch in the photo is also the same as the one on my 1999 Rotax 604 ( with Paioli 's)
I didn't realise that type were on the Suzuki as well. Interesting.

Thanks for your reply. Does your kill switch kill the ignition when the bike isn't running AND stop the engine when the bike is running?

That's exactly the same switch as my 99 Rotax has had since new. And funny enough mine no longer kills the engine, but it used to!

Interesting...

I thought mine used to, but I've not had the bike long enough to be certain...
