I have just become a 406 owner, and was wondering what the idle speed should be, mine ticksover nicely at 2000RPM, which I think is high for a thumper, but having said that the gearbox is smooth when selecting 1st gear and so it doesn't concern me too much, but as it warms the idle speed rises 50 to 100 rpm more, which seems a little bit too high. I was wondering if this is normal, or do I need to take steps to lower it ?

Not having a rev counter on mine means I set tick over by ear.

Turn screw out till it starts to run unevenly Then screw in a tad, if it stalls a lot just increase a small amount
If it aint sharp I can play with it

Hi Monty, I haven't yet looked in the manual that was given to me with the bike yet to study the carb set up, I saw 3 languages and threw it in the drawer, But are you talking about the mixture screw when you say you back it out till it starts to run rough, or I'm pressuming there must be an idle screw that sets the slide, I was hopeing that was the case ?,.Anyway I must get the manual out when I get home and have a look at the carb.

The one you want is the spring loaded screw on the right hand side of the picture..

I can't get a screwdriver in mine when the carb is in situ, but you can turn it with grips.

Thats the kiddie, It can be on either side of the carb, either way it will be in the centre of the slide.

Spot on at 1500, just sounds happier when your sat at the lights waiting to burn the boy racer sat in his peugeot 106 with the subwoofer sending him deaf. :D
