Just heard that the DS has been recovered from the River Wandle

Picking it up tomnorrow and will jet wash and then tackle the bits that need to be dried out. Anyone got any experience of recovering a drowned bike and in particular suggestions as to which bits I should prioritise?

Thx

let everything electrical dry naturally, check clocks arnt full of water.
i would empty the tank and carbs/fuel lines and again leave it all to dry naturally.
seat sponge may go moldy buddy.

but heyyyyyyyyy youve got the bike back!

water is better than fire!

Good news mate ;)
Im not sure about the problems after a lot of time in water. I would say tank off and flush, headers off, carbs out and clean, oils and filters, plug out and a nice dry place with heating to get the rest dry. Dont be temped to turn her over just in case she hydro locked. It might be worth flushing oil through her too :) Then theres headlight, clocks etc to dry.
If your not on the edge, your taking up too much room

When you've got most of the crap off, take plug out and see if you can find out if the engine stopped on compression, which is usual

If this happened then there is almost no water got in the engine from the inlet or exhaust, put the plug back in and take as much off the bike to dry as possible

Once the carbs are off you'll see how far the water got, dry out the intake

Take the exhaust off and do the same to that then drain the engine oil ...... if you're lucky there will be no water in it

In which case only the head really needs to come off

The best way to clean everything else is diesel and a tooth brush, the electrics ought to be OK once dry as presumably the ignition wasn't on

When it's rebuilt put flushing oil through and then normal oil, it should turn over by hand smoothly

Your starter motor will need to be cleaned inside and the windings washed, there should be a local car starter motor place who will do this cheaply

Clean and repack your bearings, replace wheel bearings

Hopefully the rest will be water stained and clean up OK

Good Luck mate, I've been there a couple of times, it takes so long for everything to dry out, I practically totally dismantled the last bike this happened to

if its that bad after the police give it back you may be able to ask the insurer to write it off as it may not be economical to repair it . i know its not a car but by the time you get it back the rust may have set in by that time . it would be a full engine rebuild in my eyes . thats a lot of work for the average joe public . and a hefty bill for labour at a bike shop.
i know the bike shops here charge roughly £50 and hour labour if not more .

^^^ Too right, speak to the insurance company about writing it off with agreed resale to you

Call your local big bike dealer and ask them for a quote to strip, clean and rebuild your bike

Anthony at Haines would be only keen to chip in on your side if you tell him you'll be needing bits from him

Good luck mate, any way I can help, let me know :ph43r:

Picked up bike at w/e and there is only slight crash damage and otherwise the bike looked OK. However I was interested that the joy riders had the fuel on and not reserve - why would you dump it before you ran out out of petrol??

Closer investigation showed that post crash they ran out of oil first...........motor locked solid

Guess I'll take the money and run as don't have the time or heart for a full nut and bolt rebuild on what will be a total right off

Anyone got a ropey DS they want to sell? Prefer S/M wheels as have knobblies still in shed
