Hey y'all, Thought this may be of interest to anyone with an upcoming test. Took my 644 digger for its mot yesterday and it failed on...wait for it! LACK OF REAR PILLION FOOTPEGS! of all things. I nearly fell over in dis-belief. Was told by "THE MAN" that the mot requirements have been updated recently, & that because the bike has a seat large enough for two, it has to therefore have rear footrests to qualify as a pass . None of my biking mates could believe it, or were aware of this new legislation, and a few are in the bike trade. I should say that when I got my ds it did not come with the ccm footpegs/plates that I have seen on one or two bikes,so if you are in the same boat as me then forewarned is fore-armed. :chin:

I would put in a complaint, which you are allowed to do if you dont agree with the tester.

Do you still have the strap across the seat, if so remove it, that denotes pillion carrying.

As for the seat being big enough for 2, it is a trail bike, and the seat is no different to my CR which has a seat big enough for 2, but I 'm buggered if I'll take a pillion around a MX track

If it aint sharp I can play with it

I took my mine in in Feb and they said the same as I didn't have foot pegs fitted. I then went to mate who is waiting to get his MOT bay opened in his workshop and he said they were right. Because if you have the strap fitted on the seat you must have foot pegs fitted. Get rid of your strap.

Been told that if your bike has no pillion pegs then it doesnt need a chain guard for mot so how can they have to have pillion pegs?

Its all to do with the seat strap.

Cheers monty/hursty/mark ,I kinda got the the feeling I had caught him on a bad day !W*:~#ker!! Didnt think of grinding the lugs off, good idea! heath robinson'd some R1 heel plates with 70s kwak pegs then took it for "retest" he looked at one side of the bike from his office window! and pronounced it fit. For all he cared I could have tie-wrapped some lego onto my bike, I am going to put in a complaint.
My seat has no strap but has the little rack with offending grab rail !

As I said, have you got the strap fitted across the seat, if so remove it and pegs and chain guard, all should be well with the world.

Or take it to a mot guy with common sense.

Sorry forgot, according to Health and safety chap on course I just did, we dont have common sense, cos we are all morons. he dont like me :D

Probably cos he would not have a job.

Rant over :D

Take a look at the Motorcycle and sidecar testers manual section 6.2
When I took mine in he did give me pass first time and said if you get stopped they were on when you came in. Top bloke.

quote from tester guide

pillion foot rests are not required on motor bicycles that only have a single seat. in addition some motor bicycles used on or after 14 June 1993, which are intended to carry a passenger may not be fitted with footrests but with handholds attached to the motor bicycle frame adjacent to, or part of the seat. Refer to manufacturers informationbeg owners hand book.

yeah ,useful link that. I had checked and assumed that due to the factory rail/rack I would be ok, but my man must have been having a really bad day! Unlucky! :(
