Swap front forks?

Re: 1999, 604 CCM, Trail.

This bike has Paioli front forks but I'm wondering whether I can swap them for some Whitepower forks that I have?

The 1999 headstock (with Paioli's) is slightly different from the 2001 (with Whitepower's) and from what I've read on the forum's, the bearings are different?

Anyway, can anyone enlighten me as to whether the swap can be done and if so, does it need different size bearings?

Thanks,
John

I would assume you will need the yokes from a rotax frame fitted with wp forks, even then I am not sure if the head stock is the same, If longer or shorter then the yoke stem will have to be made longer or shorter,.

I have seen it done so it is possible,

also front wheel fitment will be different, and caliper bracket

Maybe someone here has it done and will answer, (WP forks on Grey frame)
If it aint sharp I can play with it

Forgot to say - I have the yokes for the Whitepower forks, so I'm looking to swap the whole set up, forks and yokes.
Cheers,
John.

You will need new bearings if you use the 48mm and not the 43mm WP fork and spacers.

Monty,
To be honest I'm not really sure if it's worth doing anyway!
The Paioli's are good forks in their own right.
It's just that I've just got another set of WP's and I'm thinking that if both my CCM's have the same forks then I could always swap them if I need to (i.e. fork seals leaking) - so I can always keep one bike usuable at all times.

German 404,
They are the usual CCM 43mm Whitepower USD's - do you know if the bearings are the same on the 43mm WP's as the Paioli's?

Thanks

I've seen 48mm Husaberg forks fitted to a Suzy R30 with radial caliper as well....
I think Chris (Moss) had a few teething problems sorting out the bearings,I know it handled
badly when I gave it a quick wizz but he did sort it eventually...(then promptly took em back off and sold the bike)
CCM 644,Kent cam,Braking wavy disc and 4pot caliper,Brembo radial m/c etc etc

I put some Talons off a 604 Paioli fork in my 404 with a 43mm fork. Big plus: the spindle diameter is the same so the bearings are the same (if you need some, I have some high quality bearings left)
BUT you have produce some new spacers which is a bit tricky...
First I would check if the triple clamp fits right away - that could be a bigger problem

cheers

I can't see it being much of a job swapping the different yokes. The only difference I can see is the steering lock set up(as in how far the forks are allowed to turn) are different. Theres a bit of bar welded on the headstock of the black frame that the lock bracket butts up against. Considering on my black/wp frame this has absolutely no effect on the lock as the wiring harness on one side and the oil return on the other stops the forks before the bracket does.
The only prob there may be is if the cups of the different bearings sit in different size recesses in the headstock. I'll have a closer look tomorrow and get some pics of the different frame setups.
Funnily enough I'm thinking of going t'other way and sticking paioli's on mine 'cause I think they look better B)

Grey frames headstock is 1/4" longer than black frame, anyone know if the stem being 1/4" further down its hole in the top yoke would weaken it?
