i need to know a thread size .. its imperial or AF or what ever you call the NON metric size.

.. a M6 nut is a little too big so what ever is the size just below M6 is what im looking for, i know its not a 1/4" as thats too big and thats all i have found in local shops

The next standard imperial size down would be 3/16 which is just under 5mm. If that's the case then it's most likely a BSF, BSW or 2BA thread. If you can measure the pitch (threads per inch) you'll know

BSF is 32 TPI
BSW is 24 TPI
2BA is 31 TPI

If it's none of the above, you'll find the data here http://www.green-oval.com/data/zeus.pdf

Being an old fart helps sometimes

hmm .. if 3/16 is just under 5mm .. does that mean its smaller than a M5 bolt?

i have to ask as the stupid bolt im having problems with nearly takes a M6 but you can just about slide the nut over the threads, and a M5 nut is massively to small.

maybe i should just take the back light apart and see if i can change the bolts grrr

Did you not get all the fixings with the light, I would have thought a nut and washer would be a std thing,

It could be a badly cut thread, the die may have been closed up to much, did it come from america, as they still use weird english threads, whilst rest of the normal world use metric now
If it aint sharp I can play with it

it was a custom made light monty .. i think stelios had it made.

when it started miss behaving i took it off and although im 100% sure i screwed the little nuts back on it i now cant find them for love nor money.

i think i'll just pull it apart and see about glueing some M6 bolts in there before i go loopy

It could be 2BA but 2BA is 3/16 OD, and it sounds like that's too small if M5 is too small. 3/16" is around 4.6mm. Having worked with imperial threads for years as a machinist in the 70s / 80s I can't think of any imperial threads between 1/4" and 3/16". That would be 7/32" and I'm almost positive there is no BSW, BSF, BA, or even UNC thread which is 7/32" OD. Strange..
