Thanks to Rudi and whoever else is responsible for opening this site. My bike is 2003 model and I am a 1947 model but I am working better than my bike is at the moment. Have twice had to push it home > 5 miles recently. Good job it isn't a Gold Wing - my arms were hurting enough as it was. It's a lovely bike though with both sets of wheels and only 3k on the clock. When it goes it's fantastic. Intended to do a bit a greenlaning while I've got the knobblies on but haven't managed to find a single green lane in Staffordshire yet. Both times it has conked there was a strong smell of petrol. What do people think? Sticky jet, stick float, hole in float? I'm not very good with spanners. |

The DS and R30 often suffer from a sticking float bowl / needle valve, and if the fuel tap(s) [2 on the later R30's] are left on, can drain the tank in to the sump and or air box depending on teh arrangment of the valves... Al so their is as standard a small filter gauze in the inlet pipe of the carb, often removed by owners - this can very easily get blocked and cause poor running, or reduce flow, possibly resulting in a fuel weep - the fuel hose could also be past its best... so check for the gauze, and a smart tap on teh float bowls with a screw driver handle may help before you try the task of taking the carbs out... which will be a whole round of questions ;-) |

Smell of petrol...check the taps aren't leaking, they have a tendency to do so. You can check if the fuel has leaked past the engine valves as Paul suggested by having a shufty at the oil level,it very often dumps the fuel into the sump.... It can also run out of the exhaust system, mine dripped out of the end can, which when removed had about a litre of Super unleaded in it.... |

Thanks Marc - good to hear from you. I always turn petrol tap off when parked. Can't see any petrol in sump. What has happened on last two occasions it has conked is :- bike starts first kick. No smells of petrol. Go for run. Engine brilliant - pulling like a train. Do about 20 miles and then engine suddenly stops with a big smell of petrol. No chance of restarting. Push it home. Looks like I might have to delve into the carbs. Eeek, frightening. |
