decided to buy myself a ccm r30 supermoto. i did actually own a race ccm r30M many moons ago, but had to sell it when i had my accident (without having rode it)

anywho, i have got myself a lime green bike with 7400 miles on clock. started it up today and it seems a little noisy when running on the clutch side of the engine. Not sure exactly where the noise was yet as i had oil being forced up and out the clutch cable. could there be a breather that is partially blocked?

any suggestions before i start tearing into the bike?

welcome to the site, you dont say whether its a rotax or suzy engine, if rotax which I'd guess at, the sprag sounds noisy,
If it aint sharp I can play with it

Hey monty,

I have to report it's a rotax R30. I didn't want a suzuki engine one as I wanted one close to the R30m race bike I owned and sold before riding (bike accident.) The old man loved it. Got pictures somewhere.

Found out why oil came up the clutch cable. DICKHEAD had way too much oil in it. I drained 5 litres out the engine and frame. Fresh oil and I had a good look and listen to the bike with the stethascope and the noise is definetly in the clutch basket area. Having read the service paperwork I have, it supposedly had a new gear set put in at the beginning of the year.

I've bit the bullet and pulled the bike apart and the Sprag clutch looks great. Looks like someone butchered the clutch cable and adjuster so I have brought a venhill cable and reworked the clutch arm etc.

When I looked at the clutch basket it's self, It seemed Loose. So it's been stripped off and new ebc plates are ready to go in. Just about ready to put it back together today. when I am happy with the engine, I am going to smash the horrible rear light off the tail (looks aftermarket) and make a nice one to tidy the ass up.

When the ccm is sorted, I can move on to my husqvarna sm610 (keihin fcr-mx carb conversion) and see which makes me smile more.

Too much oil will do strange things, glad you sorted things.

the gear the sprag fits in and the one it drives on the crank have to be changed as a pair as they are matched, so hopefully thats what they changed.

According to the previous owner, it was the gearbox gear set that was changed as they complained of notchy changes.

Plus when i turn over the bike with the starter, there are no untowards noises in that area.

well got the bike back together filled it up with 2.25 litres of mineral oil and started the bike up.

It's still a little noisy on the clutch side but not as bad as it was. got my helmet on and took it up the road and got oil dripping out the clutch cable.

Not sure how or where the engine breathers are on this bike.

engine breather under the right hand mag cover, though you should never get oil in there as there is a seal between the engine, some will drip through if bike laid on right for a while

Anyways, back the the problem child. I can't seem to put my finger on the crankcase becoming pressurised. Going to pull tank and seat off and see if the breathers are partially blocked. Has anyone put the breathers into a catch tank with a filter on? I have done this to my triumph tiger and buell.

Have you done a wet and dry compression test, could be rings letting by, which is increasing sump pressure

thanks for the reply monty. Was reading up about a comp check in another post. Will check it out when I get chance. Any idea that the wet/dry reading should be.

A good engine should be in the region of 160psi, if you get that dry then alls good, if its low try squirting some oil down the bore, this will seal the rings and should give a higher reading, if it does then rings are letting by, if the same then your valves are leaking, if you get the later then this is not your problem with the crank compressing

well i finally got round to doing a compression check and dry I got 175psi using a snap on screw in compression tester.

I purchased a adaptor to screw into the plug in the clutch cover so i can attach a gauge to see what is going off

Hi and welcome to the forum..

The 604 engines breath through the centre of the cranks and out the tube below the ignition case. On race engines we cut a new hole on top of the gearbox like the 504 engines which have solid cranks.

As for your noisy clutch the basket may have been filed a few times making g the plates a bit sloppy and noisy. A new basket and 8 rivets is only answer at about 70 odd quid.

Also noisy motors are caused by incorrectly shimed counter balance shafts. If you can pull and push the sprag gears to and fro it will need replacing shimming. Last one I did with all new bearings etc was Japanese quiet!

Thanks for the reply.

I hate not having information. Been trying to find good pictures of breathers, pipework etc so I can verify what's right and wrong.

Been trying to find out what a fitting is on the sprocket / ignition side of the engine that is underneith near the frame. it's got a bright orange hose on it about 3" long with a bolt crammed in the end. Will grab pics.

How do I go about shimming the counter balance?

Un block it ASAP!!! Thats how the engine breathes every time the piston comes down!

It should go up to the air box...

looks like a previous owner was a git.

I'm going to make up a little stainless tank to fit in the tail like I did on my buell xb12x as it's a common mod on those.

As soon as I get the bike running and sounding good, I am going to make a new silencer if you can call it a silencer LOL

Any "how to" on how to check the balancer shaft? I am assuming looking at the exploded parts drawings

Posted Image

I'm going to have to split the cases and check the measurement between the internal bearing faces and the shoulders on the balancer shaft.

Yep but good practice to vent in the air box.. better than all over the rear tyre!!!
