my 2002 604e has a small oil leak that appears by the exhaust on the barrel , it doesnt look like it is coming down the head so I think it could be the head gasket ????? , before I had the bike it has obviously been apart as the base gasket looks new and the barrel has been painted while off the bike if a fetching red (although the rest of the engine is standard grey ) . Is the head gasket an engine in situ job ??? Just looked on haines and no head gasket just three o rings , what seals the barrel to the head ???? or is it just metal to metal with no sealant or gasket ?

Metal to metal, you can put a light smear of hylomar, and can be done in situ... Mine needs doing and will be done in the bike,....

O rings in the for sale section, lap the head and barrel in so they are nice and flat then just fit new O rings,
If it aint sharp I can play with it

When I bought mine 15months ago , it hadnt been taxed or m o t for several years so i dont know if it was stood or just being used without tax and m o t , it is only weeping a bit of oil ,car camshafts on my 2.5 tdi v6 are my next major job then doing these o rings should be a doddle !!!!

I always keep some handy from monty, worth replacing as they go flat and hard with time, every bike ive bought that hasnt been used in a while has wanted a set.

Best to remove engine and head to do a proper job as you could theoretically fit 2x O rings with the engine in but not the one on the rear right pin.

Never use hylomar on the mating surfaces- ever!

The Rotax manuals have conflicting info about the use of loctite 574. I fit the seals as they come.

Correct spec O rings will never go hard and brittle only incorrect specification o rings. They leak if reusing old ones or as said incorrect specification which go hard and brittle the leak oil not only outside the engine but into the combustion chamber too..

Hope that helps
