hi when you do the valve clearances on a 604 do you
do it with the crank locked as though you were changing the belt

I haven't, personally. Nor have I ever locked the crank for changing the belt, but that's just me.
I drink too much, I swear too much, I ride too fast and I crash too often.

It is a universal impossibility for me to leave my tools alone and my bikes standard. 'It must go faster!!'

No need to lock the crank, just set engine to TDC, there is a fair amount of movement either way before it will interfer with your measurements

On another site I frequent that all use Rotax engines, locking the crank is the first bit of advice you get told on there, even when changing the cam belt. I've never bothered locking the crank as Monty says you've plenty of play before it interferes.
Just a flunky along for the ride.
