I am finding it hard to get my 604 to start

brand new lithum battery with 15v showing, click on the decompressor, choke , hit the starter and it does one spin and stops dead

same again and the battery dead plus the earth wire gets hot.

thought it was a bad earth put a new thicker earth lead on and give it a good earth same thing :what:

Does it kick over freely, only thinking it could be the starter gear/ starter

If the earth is getting hot after one turn, I'd think you have a short cct some where, live cable is not pinched some where or shorting on the starter terminal
If it aint sharp I can play with it

there should be a thick earth going from the battery to the frame, about 4 or 5 inches long.
when i took my loom apart the other week, that cam cover earth wasnt even connected to anything!!

Mine has a large black cable running with the starter cable and bolts to the starter mounting bolt
If it aint sharp I can play with it

I've got both. The one from the rocker cover is bolted behind the rear brake reservoir, and the main earth for the starter is (obviously) bolted between starter mounting bolt and battery.

I also ran a separate earth from the loom to the reservoir bolt, as well as the one from the loom to the battery.

I've learned the hard way that one can never have too good an earth!
I drink too much, I swear too much, I ride too fast and I crash too often.

It is a universal impossibility for me to leave my tools alone and my bikes standard. 'It must go faster!!'
