im about to change some fork seals over on my 644 (its weeping but nothing to bad) and i was having a fiddle with the rebound adjusters at the top. i have adjusted the suspention on a load of bike now and i noticed that the ones at the top of these forks dont "click" when you turn them...??.......... is this normal on these bikes?

they do make a difference when you turn the by the way, they just dont click

You are correct there is no audible click just a slight resistance

Just done the fork seals on mine and my top adjusters don't click as such but you can feel them click as you turn them if that makes any sence :chin: also the sprung plunger rod that fits in the adjuster had siezed on one fork leg (coated in a nasty black residue !! not sure what it was ? ) when servicing the forks i found a black & decker type workbench very usefull i will post a pic as soon as i find my Photobucket password :what:

ah. thats great news. thanks guys. i was holding off taking them apart as i didnt want to open a can of worms hahah... i dont know why but for some reason taking the forks apart bothers me. i have rebuilt a few engines nowe and build a bobber from the ground up but ive never done a set of fork seals and im hesitent about doing them!!!! im sure it will be fine. i take it the amount and type of fork oil is stated in the instruction book?? ill take a look tomorrow anyway.

thanks again

Comes in very handy when filling with oil and putting top caps back on, also note the wifes basting thing !! best one is with the metal pointed attchment on then you can push on a length of tube the correct length for the oil height and suck out the excess oil and bobs your uncle perfect oil level :dirtbike:

cool. the oil level is the bit im most bothered about i think. getting the right amount in there, the right type and so on. i have seen a couple of online vids on how to do it all and like i said im pretty good with a spanner so ill get at it at the weekend

The WP manual says 25mm below the four holes in the top of the fork leg, i measured the bottom of the hole at 75mm down on the inside of the fork leg so plus 25mm below that is 100mm so my oil level is set at 100mm from the top of the tube using 10w fork oil.
I think the standard level is between 125 and 100mm but me being a large 16 stone thought a smaller air gap would firm up the front end but not being an expert i could be totally wrong :chin: also fitted some push button air bleeders

I set all mine to 125mm air gap, 10w oil. you will need just over a litre, but will have to buy 2.
If it aint sharp I can play with it

The air bleeders are handy don't forget to have the front wheel of the deck before you give them a press

check the manual states the depth is measured with spring removed and fork down (ie compressed), as opposed to fully extended

some fork manuals give this info differently
some owner manuals give an air gap when the bike is on a stand etc, which is different to a fork service manual info.

Just to clerify - oil level 100mm to 125mm from top of tube with the forks fully compressed with no springs in also pump the damper rod up and down several times to bleed the air out and leave to stand for a while - good time to go and get a cuppa - then adjust oil level put caps back on ( don't forget to set the repound adjusters all the way back anticlockwise ) then torque up, job done !!

yup imho
to adjust oil level:
get a bathroom/kitchen spray cleaner
chuck the bottle and cut the straw to 110mm or whatever
place sprayer on fork top and spray excess off

:)
