hi guys

ive just replaced the fork seals on my 2002 r30 644
now im ready to add the oil

so ive read various posts on here, but im struggling to make sense
and i want to be sure that im reading about the correct forks

so a couple of questions for you guys please

1, how much oil do i put in? or how do i measure the air gap correctly?
2, which grade do i use , ive bought 15 but i believe now it should be 10 ?
thanks guys

The anount/air gap and grade of oil is more to do with personal preference and you weight rather than there being a correct setting.

you could find 100mm air gap and 15w oil is good for you but not for me if you see what i mean

std air gap is 120mm, road riding 15w should be fine, 5-10w for the offroader
If it aint sharp I can play with it

now for another dumb question

how do i measure the air gap exactly?
can this be done with the forks on the bike with the wheel just of the ground
or on the bench vertical?

on the bench, spring removed, pump the Staunton/top tube up and down to fill the reservoir, top tube fully down then measure the air gap, I fill more than needed, then use a syringe with a pipe attached, marked at 120mm and drop inside, keep syphoning till you pull air,

pull top tube out refit spring and top, screw together
If it aint sharp I can play with it

or get an old bathroom/kitchen cleaner spray bottle thing
ditch the bottle and cut the straw of the spray trigger to 120mm or whatever
fill the oil roughly and then squirt the excess out

well i think i may have been a bit too hasty ,not letting the oil settle before measuring the level
took the forks off again and repeated and i managed to get 460ml in this time

thanks guys
oh yes , i did reove the spring btw
