Not sure if this is the right section of the forum but if not I'm sure someone will put me right. Wanting to know if anyone has as part of their projects, experimented with different tanks to increase the fuel capacity of a 644 or 404 DS and if so how did they get on. Eg. does another bikes (XL, XT, DR) large capacity tank fit or adapt to fit the CCM ? that sort of thing. Really want to increase the fuel capacity of my bike(s) especially the 644 but don't have the money to 'buy n try' off flea bay nor afford to get a Safari brought in from Australia. Any info would be appreciated. |

its the trouble with niche manufacturer, nobodoy wants to mould up a big tank don't think anyone has come up with anything other than the acerbis universal jobby be hind the clocks, so carrying weight too high aftermarket Clarke/IMS/Acerbis tanks would be simplest if you can get one with a similar frame width then adapt seat to fit. acerbis used to do a mahoosive 40litre job that fitted old DR350/BMW twins easiest way is to take your tank off and drain it, then see what bikes it will fit on eg XR,KLR,DR than have 20litre tanks available maybe ask on ABR forum and go to one of their many meets to try various bikes reckon dealers would tell you to foxtrot-oscar centralised mass is best, so a side/seat tank would be good, but may need a fuel pump if you're keen a decent ali fabricator would make summat if you gave them the bike and time/£s perhaps easier to get a decent rack made that carries 2x 10litre jerries, then you keep moving weight to main tank as you go http://www.tooled-up.com/manproduct/steel-jerry-can-holder-for-10-litre-tp-jerry-cans/159812/ http://www.tooled-up.com/product/metal-jerry-can-black-5-litre/159805/ http://justgastanks.com/index.php?cPath=4 how far do you want to go? |

There's a guy who posted in the 'welcome' section from Australia who had a big tank on a CCM - think it was a Safari tank for a DR. hard to tell without having seen it up close, but it seems a good fit from the pics he's posted. |

Yes saw that and others over the years with that tank fitted. I PM'd the Australian contributor to seek info about fit etc but there has been no reply to date. I've even hucked Austin Clews hoping they'd be able to help or even supply one of the old C26 Dakar tanks for adaptation but again no luck. If money was no object then I'd experiment of have something fabricated but... |

Sorry for not getting back to you guys for so long, but yes my tank is a SUZUKI DR650 30 LTR SAFARI TANK . It takes a bit of fiddling round to make it fit but once it"s on it"s rock solid i"ve crash tested a few times, flipped it on hill climbs & put it down the track at 50mph nothing moved. I was luck i rang safari tanks and they send me up one of their reject tanks to experiment on. First cut the old mounts off so the tank sits in place now the fiddly bit get a heat gun & i use a big metal spoon & start heating up where it touches & press it in it"s not that hard you soon learn how much heat to apply just go steady till you get the hang of it. Once you have it sitting on the frame you can work out where the mounts will go,then the back two mount holes will need two bolts welded to the frame and more heat to leave the tail section out and the last bit make a support bracket for the front the one that comes with the tank won"t fit then trim under the seat it rubs on the two bolts. It all sounds hard but it"s not really if i can work out how to put some pictures up it will make sense. The rally bracket is a ktm part it bolts straight to the triple clamps headlight is a trail tech and the screen is a ktm . I have a talon cush drive hub, garmin gps ,acewell & trail tech speedos, alloy bash plate again dr650 just made it fit. My bike is perfect for long hauls. hope this helps . I"ll keep logging on and see if i can help .
