Na then chaps, Been off work for 2 wks with chronic pain in the shoulder (all areas) upper arm, lower arm(not to bad here) and a numb pins and needles feeling in my index finger. Been lifting stupidly heavy weights at work which along with the cold and damp has probably lead to this injury. Went to the docs and he's referred me to physio. They massaged it and I've got to say it felt good after that but woke up in the morning with agony again. Next visit to physio is in a week. I've got to do an ice pack 4 times a day for 20mins and an exercise to try and straighten the shoulder out. Just had a look on the web at pinched nerves (which is what I think I've got) and people are saying it can take 2 FREAKING YEARS to sort itself out. Anyone had experience of this sort of injury. Any tips on how to make sleep possible and any suggestions to aid recovery would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Cuz |

Get yourself to a good acupuncturist, I ripped my right shoulder almost off grass track racing ..... the surgeons dealt with the breaks (badly, thanks Nuffield Hospital  ) but it was acupuncture helped it heal, do not let any surgeons loose on it mate, it never works Acupuncture helped relax the right muscles and accelerated the healing I've mates who have broken their backs, surgery only makes it worse, my son in law spent £16k on surgery in Switzerland and had to take a year off work .... within 6 months it was worse My best mate is crippled from surgery to relieve a trapped sciatic nerve, he twisted his back putting his bike on it's stand, he ended up having to take early retirement at 41 where they'd fucked him around Non invasive treatment is best and you can ask the physio how often heat packs can be applied You'll need private acupuncture as NHS is 'taught' in a w/end course Good luck with getting well |

White buck I'm going to have to disagree with you, my left side was completely numb left arm felt dead, tried physio , acupuncture you name it i tried it, didn't want surgery but after a horrific week of pain I finally agreed to the surgery. The surgeon went into my my neck through the front, freed all the nerves fused the bones in my neck and Inserted a metal plate In hospital for 3 days off work for 6 mths and no problems since 2002 apart from I have to have wing mirrors on bike as limited neck movement , I can turn my head to my shoulder and that's about it Oh and when I came out of hospital went straight to Matchams Park cos my 10 year old boy was entered into a supercross tournament, wife went off the head |

Nice one guys, the pins thing sounds well worth a try Whitebuck, all the shoulder muscles seem to be permanently locked on in all directions. Its like someones implanted a viagra pill in there. It's the lack of sleep and no work thats doin' my nut in. I tried herbal remedies first but that just concentrated the mind on the problem making it worse. Whisky was next which worked fine..good nights sleep, but then I was crippled on awakening, not goin' there again. Our Lasses pill box has nothing that makes any difference whatsoever, which confirms my suspicions that pmt is a myth Never tried acupuncture, I'll go an have a look and see whats about in town I used to keep myself really fit Whitey but I've got to admit, been letting it go last few years, reason this has happened no doubt. Bit of a wake up call, better sort myself out!! :D |

Think it depends on what your local hospitals like n'all Murph, you see all visitors washing their hands when they're leaving ours :o I'm hoping this is as bad as it gets for me and things will improve from there, bikes and banjos are out for the next few weeks though, Ill try the pins though 'cos I can't see it doin' any damage if it doesn't work |

Cuz have you tryed a proper "proper" sports therapist, easy to find the decent ones, just ring a local rugby/football club or if you have any type of sports center near you that brings people up into the Olympics, give them a ring tell them your problem and ask for recommended people. |

Hi cuz, I've had a bad shoulder nearly 2 years. First tore my rotator cuff 20 yes ago took a year to heal this time taking longer. I've got a shoulder impingement ,sleeping is the worse I sleep on my back with a pillow next to me to support my arm. Had accupunture a few times and found it eases it a bit but it comes back. Found the best thing the electric pads that are used for slimming place one either side and run a pulse through it but take it steady, a lot of my mates use this with good results and anti inflammatorys. It would probably get better if I stopped training. |

Hey cuz, i started with numbness and pins and needles in my ring and index fingers on my left hand in jan, it felt like my fingers were going to explode with the amount of pressure in them, i also had a twanging feeling and an ache in my shoulder blade. I went to a private sports therapy place and i have been having physio and massage to try and release the trapped ulner nerve. Being a self employed joiner, a dad of a 2 year and doing martial arts 3 times a week, my muscles never really have time to rest this leads to my neck muscles being over tight (which i never realised, until she did some massage on them and i hit the ceiling) this is then trapping nerves in my neck too. I have been doing the exercises, stretching and taking ibuprofen i havent bothered with the heat pad things. Its been getting better slowly. She has just started accupuncture on me today to try and increase recovery time. Just need to see what happens now. Sorry for the waffling hope this is of some help |

I suffer from a frozen shoulder and use a combination of paracetamol for the general pain relief and ibruprofen for the muscle pain ( anti-inflammitory) and the deep heat stuff in a can. Cold packs aswell as hot packs can be used. The pins n needles is caused by the inflamed muscle tissue pressing against the nerves that run across your shoulder and down your arm and it also restricts the flow of fluids that why the fingers swell. there ain't many over the counter pain relief drugs that are any good . You need to get to your G.P and get into the mophine based drugs for true pain relief :P :-/ |

Thanks for the replies chaps, new I'd get some good ideas on here and all very much appreciated. There's probably been every injury you can possibly suffer experienced by our members, think Whitebucks had 'em all :D Getting feeling back in the index finger so I'm hoping it might sort itself out with rest, pills and physio. Like some of you guys I'm one man band self employed and talk of 2yrs recovery time is quite scary. Think I may be lucky and not done it as bad as some...time will tell. Bloody summer out there n'all, sods law!! Off to do some left hand spannering in the garage :D |

It will get better Mark. May not feel like it at the moment. You sound like you are in the right frame of mind which is good, always think positive. Thought my sciatica would never end, then one morning got up feeling like a new man, no aches or nowt. OK so I over did it other day and twinged back but I've been doing it for years. nothing like before xmas tho Having the summer to look forward to helps |
