Since i changed the barrel over on the r30 ive had light ticking matching revs, Idle it doesnt appear to make much noise but 1.5k> it ticks.
Im wondering if i put the cam chain screws in and properly covered them.

such a tool arnt i....

Anyone think of what else would cause this? im not burning oil, not burning more fuel, no oil leaks on the new base gasket, its not exhaust.

Cheers
Ross

Rob,

We checked and they were in spec in the middle of the max/min. however other than change the barrel we adjusted the exhaust tappets. wonder if they need to be even tighter than spec.... bah

they should be a 'light drag' on the feeler gauge
a bit loose is fine, mine ticks

its quite loud though Rob, and it didnt used to. Maybe i should just try adjusting them one way test, then the other way.

ill get a vid tomorrow see what you think. such a shame as shes smooth as butter apart from the tick. little things like this annoy me...

I was with Ross when he checked the valve clearances and I'm confident they're fine.

It's a bit of a perplexing problem :what: While we've not had many 4t bike engines to bits, lots of 2t action and lots of car engine action though and the barrel, piston and base gasket swap seemed to go pretty smoothly really. It fired right up afterwards and ran nice, and with the tappets double checked we're running out of ideas!

i would say the tappets may be too loose . dont tighten them more than the spec though or you will get burnt valves like this Posted Image

that was in a head that had been shimmed up wrong . the clearance was 2 thou when it should have been 10 thou. the valve was a little open when it should have been closed . the valve not closing was letting the exhaust gas out when it should have been sealed and its burn the valve away . there was burning oil too mind you .

re check the clearances . i cant remember off the top of my head but we dont go any lower than 5 thou at work on heads even if the makers say 4 thou . a single sheet of newspaper is around 2 thou

also is the 644 an interference engine ? for example if you time it wrong ( 180 degrees out of time) would the piston kiss the valves ? could be the piston hitting a valve . although the valves when new would be machined the same they wear different so one may be a tad longer than the other and its kissing the piston . i once timed my 644 wrong but i noticed before i turned it a full turn . might be worth popping a plug out and using a wooden dowel in the plug hole to find if its timed on tdc

I doubt it would be running if the valves clipped, even if it did it would be gutless and missing etc with fook all compression. I would make sure the headers are sealed, a little leak can sound like a ticking noise bit like a tappet. Pinking can also sound ticky too.
If your not on the edge, your taking up too much room

And we triple checked the timing and have had the exhaust off to check it's seated and sealed right. :chin:

I'm kinda thinking it's getting to the stage where all there is to do is to start taking it apart again till you find the problem Ross.. :(
