Ive not been on for the last few days as Ive been away on a short trip on a Narrowboat. Apart from alot of snow and fooking cold it was bloody awsome fun. I done this to see if I still wanted to buy one and as I managed to have a minor flood, heating packed up and engine issues (good job its my trade) I still want one. Have any of you had one or been involved with this sort of thing, its always good to get peoples views etc. My plan is to live on one when I get out of the mob.

Wr1sty me n my family have been around boats all our lives I lived on my uncles for 6 months narrowboat, my grandad n my self both had cabin cruisers much easier to steer as narrowboats turn the rudder left goes right and right to left bloody confusing they have there good sides being they are steel and can take a few good knocks and help with opening lock gates! Watch out for size when buying one as it goes of length for moorings I remember correctly my 26ft cabin cruiser was 1800 for the yr to live on a boat you need 40ft + bed built up all time log burner, check it has a full boat safety certificates gas etc anything else you want to know ask away but they are awesome fun I built a metal ramp for on back of my uncles boat for my sv 650 took it around with me lol

I've a mate that's lived on a 60 footer for the last fifteen years on the Lancaster canal and he still loves it. Arge on here also has one on the LC,around 35ft though he uses it mainly for fishing and getting away from it all. Try a pm to Arge if you get stuck for info I'm sure he'd be happy to help

My Dad had several, he's now gotten bigger Dutch style boats that I designed for canal use with David Ables building them

When he had the narrowboats he fitted one out at w/ends and from steel hull to finished boat took 28 working days so fitting one out today would take a lot less time

Have a look here http://www.liverpoolboatco.co.uk/id6.html

I assume you've seen the series 'The Boat that Guy Built' when Guy Martin fits out one ...... steam driven shower :D :D

I work for the Canal and River Trust (British waterways til recently). We work from a boat all day, its brilliant. As for living on one I always thought a wide beam 60ft or 72ft would do but depends where you want to sail. some places they won't fit. but you can fit the CCM on the back. :dirtbike:

Wow funny how untill you mention it you dont know how many people have the same interests. Thanks for the info so far, I was looking at 70' as I was on a 66' and its only just big enough for us. As for area Im not sure yet but I know I have to watch the size on some canals due to locks and winding holes. I will be making sure I can fit the bike on, mind Im really after a residential mooring but they are like hens teeth.

Yeh, there is a guide for boat lengths fitting in lock you can get from watford HQ or Leeds HQ, longest near hudds is 72ft but to be honest 68-70 is your best bet unless you reverse in. Goto Castleford towards Hull and the sky is the limit as sand bares go there and they are like a football field.

Have fun, 4mph can be scary. :D

Its a bloody good question but Ive got access to some storage for the things the wife would like to keep. Im on the other hand not that attached to items, I think its a military thing tbh. I could live out of a kit bag and have done more than a few times for 6mths and never missed a thing, well maybe my bike lol.
