Hi All,

I've just joined..... so hello!! :bye:

I’m thinking of buying a CCM and I thought this was the first / best place to start!!
I like the R30 – and plan to use it for some “light” green lane work!! Nothing mad!! And ideally have a spare set of road wheels!

I do have a couple of questions…

Do all R30’s have electric start?
What should I look out for / what are the problem areas on these bikes?
What are the service schedule’s like? How often do you have to change the oils? Are the valve clearances set by shims, or are they on screw type adjusters with lock nuts?

Sorry to ask such basic questions :what:

MANY MANY thanks in advance

Best Regards

Ian

Ian,

Welcome!,

Youll want a DS so you can run both sets of wheels, Otherwise youll need the longer swingarm to fit the knobblys.

problem areas:
base gasket
5th gear
speedocable snaps
rear shock eyelet

service interval im sure is 4k miles off the top of my head.
they are screw on with lock nuts

Cheers
Ross

Yes all have electric start, ever tried to kick a 644 single over?

The electric start incorporates an automatic decompresser to enable the motor to spin

If your thinking of off road, you'll need a DS, lots on fleabay at the moment

Good luck, if you find a specific bike put up a link so we can all pick holes in it :D

You may well find one that used to belong to a member

That's pretty much what MCN said in 2004

"You WILL learn to wheelie it, you WILL get points on your license"

You have been warned :D :D :D

also check and torque EVERY bolt on the bike . they have a habit of coming loose (not on every bike but on most)

150 rear supermoto tyres is the biggest unless you run a goldspeed 160 i think . or the chain will hit the rear tyre edge

Hi All

Many thanks for all the friendly replies and info..... :worthy:

Re the shock eye snapping off, am I right in saying if you check that the bearing isn't seized this won't happen?
Fab news that they are all electric start - I use to have a Maico 490 (left hand kick start) - and I was just getting flash backs of how hard it was to start!!!!!

At what mileage should you replace the cam belt?

Many thanks

Only Rotax engines have cam belts (604s), the 644s have a Suzuki Freewind engine that has a cam chain.

Comments about base gaskets only apply to Suzook engines.

I'm not sure about renewing the belt, I race mine in Rallies, so always start the season with a new belt and it doesn't do a huge number of miles.

look HERE for a quick view of the different models, which are basically

R30 comes with both Rotax and Suzuki engines, 17" wheels only.

604 Dual Sport (DS), Rotax engine, came with both 17" and 21"/18" wheels

604 Enduro, Rotax engine bascally a DS with only 18/21" wheels

604 Supermoto, Rotax engine, a DS with only 17" wheels and shorter forks (but not always)

604RS, road going version, basically a DS with different seat, tank, front mudguard and a fairing, 17" wheels, shorter forks, rare as rocking horse shit

644 Dualsport, Suzuki engine and came with both 17" and 21"/18" wheels

Obviously not all Dual Sports still have both sets of wheels (worth finding).

Also R30 plastics are not good for green laning, too brittle (and as noted you can't fit an 18" rear wheel with a knobbly unless you fit the longer DS swingarm). DS's on the other hand will stand all manner of abuse!

But of course you don't always need knobblies to go green laning

see my edit to the 644 dualsport . this came from austin clews at CCM .

Thanks BigHit, those Suzuki thingies are not my strong point!

And it should also be noted that 640s (636cc) are bored out 604s (598cc) a factory option just as 710s are bored out 644s

your welcome tony . i asked as i enquired with carole nash regarding insuring my bike . i asked what if my shed was broken into and both sets of wheels were taken along with the bike ? she then said they did not insure they type of bikes lol. i also asked if i was to claim for my bike being taken and as its on the v5c as a trail bike and it was wearing sm wheels would i still have a claim and she said the same thing " we dont insure those bikes"

so i asked CCM and that is what austen came back with . his words were " we sold the bike as a trail bike but dealers offered the bikes with the supermoto wheels as an extra as people were swapping to supermoto wheels and they saw that as a way to sell more bikes " "but they were an option ,not a seperate bike from the trail "

i was insured by carol nash at the time my first DS was stolen and it also had trail in the v5 but had sm wheels on when stolen and they still paid out .

i only asked carol nash for the fact we all know insurers will try to wriggle out any way they can and if you dont tell them it has modifications (and supermoto wheels on a trail bike would be classed as a modification) they could void your policy .

I once had a Maico too. It shattered someone´s foot and I took that as a warning. Got myself a DS in 2003. Very happy with it. Have now got a Husky but still put more miles on the old CCM. One thing needs doing is to wrap ALL the electrickery you can find so that it´s watertight and protected. And then (if it makes you happy) get the Kent cam.
