Thats what the problem was i think monty the one that snapped was just a normal steel bolt

I now have fitted the HT bolts they have a golden colour to them does this sound about right ??

It's a total PITA to sort, b depending on the size of bolt I've had decent luck previously by drilling the middle of the bolt then jamming a slightly larger flat blade screwdriver in (use an old one!) then turning the bolt out.

Failing that, the correct way is to use ne of these:

Bolt extractor

You drill the bolt and insert the remover, which is effectively a tapered left hand threaded tap. Once it reached the point where the hole is too small for the tapered thread, the bolt 'should' start to wind out instead (probably worth using lots of penetrating fluid on there first)

and what happens when you snap the bolt extractor in the bolt ? mmmmmm you wont drill that out unless you have expensive drill bits ;) see it all the time at work. drill or bolt extractor snapped in the bolt and we then have to either spark errode it or scrap the part altogether . if you come into our place with a snapped glow plug in the head and you have snapped a bolt extractor in the glow plug we will tell you head is scrap unless we get it out same if you snap a spark plug in say a ford focus head due to water in the plug recess . if you then try a torque bit hammered in or a bolt extractor you actually spread the plug out jamming it in the threads .

if you must use bolt extractors use straight fluted ones rather than the left hand thread ones above as when you tighten the above ones in they spread the bolt out and jam it

if you can get a punch into the hole and give it a good belt it may loosen the threads enough to drill it and as the drill bit bites it will screw it out as the drill bites . or try left hand drill bits

I've seen 2 of them extractors snap i don't trust them. I snapped one of the pinch bolts that hold front spindle managed to drill pretty much centre of the bit that was left almost all the way through and it spun out. plenty of wd 40 and a bit of heat if you can get in helps

what i did was get a better strength bolt (12.9 grade i think they are) and get them just a little longer so you can get a nut on the back of them . they dont come loose then .

just keep and eye on them as the bracket acts like a guillotine and cuts them very easy when they are loose

12.9 bolts are the strongest grade you get i think . 8.8 is ok for non stressed use .10.9 is better than 8.8 .
