Cleaned carbs , now won't run

As its says, I've had the carbs off to clean them and refitted and now it will just tick over on full choke but won't rev. If I take the filter off and blank off the air inlet almost completely with a rag it will run and rev. The air box was a nightmare to fit but looks as though its air tight.

Re-set the TPS

Could I have mixed a main and pilot jet up? (Don't think I have but you never know)

There is what I think is a breather pipe hanging down that I don't remember before, black, about 10mm o.d.

Anyone got a pic of the back of the carbs?

Bugger, I was sure I'd checked them when I realised they were both the same thread, hopefully I can get the float bowls off without taking the carbs out again.

yep same thread and type, chokes are 55 mains what ever you fitted usually 150's

You are not the first to fit them wrong, nor the last I'm sure

I hadn't mixed them up, but the plot thickens, pulled the bowls off and checked them to find they were correct. Put the bowls back and it was the same, would fire on full choke and rev high for about 3 seconds then drop for about 5 seconds then cut out. If you revved it it just bogged and died. I noticed it was leaking fuel and looked like it was overflowing on the left carb so pulled the bowl off and checked it was shutting off (it was) so back together tried it again but with wide open throttle to clear any flooding and it fired revved up backfired and blew the end can off
End can back on and it will run and rev but is still overflowing, I didn't alter the float setting I don't think, any more advice?

only takes a minute bit of crap to block a jet or get under the float needle if you've had the carb upside down while removing and replacing jets etc. Had the same problem a few times over years

not as knowledgeable as some but sent my mrs out to do cbt few years back ... got called down as she wanted to do road bit and couldnt..bike would start then die... ended up doing it on full choke screaming its head off ... took carb off and systematically cleeaned. ... went over kill with brake disc cleaner to make sure of clean... back to gether and no problems ... never even saw any dirt.... start from the beginning with a good clean... hassle yes but at least you can rule out dirt then

doubt very much if the needles and jet tube have worn, not many of these bikes do high mileage, if working before strip down, should work now,

Did you airline all the fuel ways, you could try the guitar string method, should be able to push all the way through, to make sure they are clear

when removed had they had fuel in them?

I tend to find the diaphragms swell and dont fit under the cap properly, so have to leave them out for a while, they then fit nice into the groove

They are fitted into the inlet rubber properly? clips not overtightened? as this opens the rubber if too tight and may let air in

Bike was running and riding before I stripped them down and hadn't been standing as far as I know. Was just cleaning them as the bikes hasn't seen much attention from the last owner. I didn't airline the fuelways just blew them through with carb cleaner.

Diaphragms fitted fine. The only stumbling block was the boot on the air box was deformed on the bottom so might not be fitting 100% correctly but as thats on the other side of the carb I didn't think it would cause a great deal of problem, I was going to check for air leaks once it was up and running.

Could it just be down to too much fuel running through the carb as the float isn't shutting off properly yet?

Waiting on some new screws from haines then I'll have the float bowls off (again!!!!) and have another delve, anyone know how to set the float height? I must have altered while they were apart.

Got my new screws and as you'd guess the old buggers wouldn't undo this time so.... Carbs out in about 4 mins, float bowls off, swapped the floats over and rechecked the needle jets were seating, put the new Allen screws in the stuck the carbs back in but with the air box off.....

Fired up straight away on choke, no fuel overflow and would rev cleanly, air box refitted, cables on and now ticks over lovely - result :drinks:
